DARIEN, Conn. – The crunch of salt beneath your stockinged feet, the dim lights in the pink-themed room, and the soothing sound of gently cascading water greet you when you enter the Salt Cave of Darien .

Take a reclining seat; sit and breathe.

This is the therapy that has been used in Europe for centuries to treat respiratory ailments and skin conditions – and to just find relaxation and rejuvenation – and is now beginning to gain popularity in the United States thanks to the use of halogenerators, which release micronized salt particles in the air and mimic a natural salt cave.

The therapy wowed Darien resident Arianne O’Donnell Schuck so much, she went to Poland to visit Wieliczka, what many would call the foremost salt mine spa in the world.

When it came time to creating her own cave, only the finest pink Himalayan salt would do. That, she said, serves up the best results.

O’Donnell Schuck swears by the treatments. “Most people will find a benefit from just one session,” she said. “[However] it might take more sessions for some. Like an antibiotic, one session may not be enough, but a culmination of sessions could be more beneficial.”

A real estate attorney in Stamford when not at the Salt Cave, O’Donnell Schuck offers regular relaxation sessions as well as yoga and meditation classes for individual and small groups. She carries a line of salt-based beauty products direct from Wieliczka and plans on offering more salt-related items such as salt lamps in the near future.

The Salt Cave officially opens Tuesday, Oct. 24. Go to 555 Boston Post Road or call 203-658-7667 for more information.
