Chop't Creative Salad Company opened its first Greenwich location Wednesday for a special event. Customers could buy a salad or sandwich for $2, with the proceeds going to a Greenwich-based charity.
One of the happy customers was Abigail Fox, who walked out with her order of a kale Caesar salad and an Asian chicken salad. She's a fan of the new eatery already.
"I heard great things about it, and I wanted to see it," Fox said as the line inside stretched all the way to the door.
Inside, workers quickly took orders and made the salads, and, yes, chopped the salads that give the restaurant its name and also hints at the ethos of speed that co-founders Colin McCabe and Tony Shure made a hallmark of their business.
"It's been like this all day," a beaming Drew Alden, the restaurant's general manager, said as he looked at they many new customers.
Alden said a customer places their order, including their choice of toppings, for an individually prepared meal. At Chop't, you get a show with your dinner as the servers go to work quickly chopping the salad with a curved, two-handled knife known as a mezzaluna.
The restaurant is at 1274 E. Putnam Ave., in the Riverside Plaza near Interstate 95's Exit 5.
McCabe and Shure, who were college friends, opened their first Chop't in Manhattan in 2001. They have since expanded throughout metropolitan New York City and into the Washington, D.C., area.
All proceeds from Wednesday's Chop't Gives Day will go to the Kids for Kids, a local organization that raises money for impoverished children in Appalachia.
The money goes to the Rockin Appalachian Mom Project's “Snacks in Backpacks” program. The program provides impoverished students in public schools in Marin County, Ky., with nutritious, easy-to-prepare food for weekend meals.
