The educational consulting firm helps students from kindergarten through college, working with students through the admissions process for college, boarding school and private school, as well as career services.

White founded Darien Academic Advisors in 2005 and has mostly been working out of her home, but this week she opened a new storefront location at 975 Post Road in Darien. Her husband, Mike, joined the business in 2013 and specializes in working with student athletes and international students.

"The college decision is one of the most important decisions and one of the most expensive decisions someone will have to face. It pays to have good advice from a counselor who can help you explore all your options," Kristin White said.

The consulting firm can offer students personal attention that they might not get through their guidance counselors, who often deal with hundreds of students and have other responsibilities beyond helping kids get into college, she said. White works with students through the whole process, aiding them in testing and essay writing, and helping them find the school that will best fit their interests and needs.

"If we find that a student really likes writing, we can work with them and point them in the right direction, whether it's PR or journalism or creative writing. We can find ways for them to get experience and ways they can focus on it in college," she said.

The career services aspect has also grown in recent years. That started when college students began asking her to help them find internships, she said. Now she and her husband work with the students to build the tools necessary for finding jobs after graduation, such as communication and writing skills. They also offer guidance on finding post-graduate and MBA programs for students to continue their education.
