Campbell is a success coach and an owner of Sylvan Learning Center in Darien. His new book, “The 16-28 Solution” shares stories and strategies for people evaluating their career and thinking of making a change in jobs. The book shares Campbell’s personal stories as well as the stories of people who have altered their business strategies or changed career paths by looking back at what they were passionate about in their youth.
“In today’s world, most people change careers eight times,” Campbell said when discussing his book at a recent Chamber of Commerce event. “’The 16-28 Solution’ is basically: what were you passionate about between the ages of 16 and 28? And the theory is, you’re going to go back to that later in life.”
Campbell said that a lot of his endeavors in his career and life link back to what he was passionate about in his youth. He started an entrepreneurs club in college, and later went on to start five businesses. He tutored while in college, and later founded the Sylvan Learning Center. He studied the environment and later went on to lead the group that preserved the Mather Meadows area in town.
He also discusses clients he has had in his career coaching business who have experienced newfound success by going back to their passions. One enjoyed brewing beer in his youth before going to work for a Fortune 100 company, but has now returned to his old hobby and is brewing a beer sold in 500 locations. Another ran a luncheon club in New York and has returned to his love of sailing, giving private lessons and taking over operation of a marine training center.
Campbell’s book also offers tips for people between the ages of 16 and 28 to help lead their career paths. These include getting a diversity of experience, taking leadership roles and finding good mentors.
