DARIEN, Conn. – Darien Cheese & Fine Food is holding a “#SaveTheEmmentaler” event on Saturday to raise awareness about the one cheesemaker left in the world using traditional methods to make Swiss Emmentaler cheese.

Ken Skovron hopes that the campaign will help bring attention to the cheesemaker, Bernhard Meier, and give his customers the opportunity to taste the difference between traditionally made Emmentaler and the mass- produced versions.

Dishes served at the event will focus on utilizing the cheese including fondue and grilled Emmentaler and country ham sandwiches. In addition, there will be seasonal beverages and special charcuterie tastings.

“Emmentaler has been around for 800 years and I want to help keep it around for many more to come. Bernhard is a firm believer in traditional Emmentaler production, which has now been recognized by the Slow Food Presidium. He uses milk produced only from local mountaintop dairies that are less than 6 miles away. This local milk helps to create wonderful flavors of hazelnut and wild mountain grasses. The cheeses are produced in 200-pound wheels and then placed in underground cellars to mature up to one year or more. The aging develops flavor and brings the distinctive terroir of this cheese,” explained Skovron.

Darien Cheese & Fine Foods is in the Goodwives Shopping Center at 25 Old Kings Highway North.
