The group has received support from 23 backers raising $3,840 toward a $150,000 goal with about two weeks left. The group is looking for support for the new Tread Pad, a "versatile workout device measuring users' physical activity and tracking performance over time," according to the Kickstarter page. The Tread Pad allows users to customize workout routines using touch pads on their feet and foot-operated switches.
"Just turn on your iPod and exercise to the changing beat of your favorite tunes," representatives said on the Kickstarter page. "Tread Pad is programmed and operated solely using your feet — no keyboarding or bending is required to initialize the product or to change your workout routine."
The product is based on a technique called the "Dot Drill" in which five circles are painted on a gym floor with the athlete performing a routine covering those five circles. The Tread Pad follows the same technique but athletes will not need coaches and instead will develop a conditioning routine using the computer program in the device.
"The goals of this conditioning routine are to develop the athlete's speed, agility and reaction time," representatives said. "Athletes often complain that the coach started the stop watch too late, stopped it too soon, and/or miscounted the actual steps taken during the drill."
The group is expecting to launch the device at $235 retail and contributors donating $150 or more will receive a Tread Pad device, shirt and additional instructional videos.
"The current Tread Pad team has been working together for a number of years on the development of this product," representatives said. "Given the current state of product design and development, field testing and consumer research, component testing and vendor selection detailed above, the risks and challenges associated with Tread Pad have been minimized."
