Yaël van Hulst and Jessica Anderson launched Jumbo Dog Artbooks, a new business based in Darien. The new company allows parents to preserve their kids’ artwork in hardcover coffee-table-style books for posterity.
“So many parents these days collect their children’s art, and it ends up in a bin or bag in the closet. Once it’s put away, no one looks at it again, although parents don’t want to get rid of it,” van Hulst said. “So, our idea was to take all of this art off parents’ hands, and create a beautiful book that they would want to display, look at, and have forever.”
The pair’s studio includes a high-quality scanner that can handle works as big as 3 feet by 5 feet. Parents can also arrange to have larger paintings or sculptures photographed in their studio to be included in the book.
Once the art is collected, Jumbo Dog will send a digital test copy of the book for the parents’ approval before going to press. All of the company’s products are printed on silver halide photo paper, which Anderson compares to a high-quality wedding album. Parents can order either an etched glass cover or a traditional hardcover for their albums.
“What sets us apart is the quality of the books,” said Anderson. “Regular photo books that you would order yourself, on a more commercial site, are mass-produced using inkjet printers and stock papers. They don’t have the same look or durability.”
All customers need to do is pick out a collection of their kids’ artwork -- up to 50 pieces for a glass-cover book or 76 pieces for a hardcover -- and send them to the Jumbo Dog studio.
Van Hulst and Anderson will also come to your home themselves to collect the items if you are a Darien resident.
“Our goal is to make it as easy an experience as possible,” said van Hulst. “It’s a great feeling to see someone’s face light up when you hand them back a beautiful artbook that the whole family will enjoy for years to come.”
