Darien's Jumbo Dog Founders Expand Custom Book Business

DARIEN, Conn. – Founders Yaël van Hulst and Jessica Anderson created Jumbo Dog art books to help busy parents organize and showcase their children’s artwork in beautiful, custom-designed coffee table books. And now Jumbo Dog is looking to expand its offerings.

Since the company launched in January, families have created beautiful books with their cherished items.

While the majority of the books Jumbo Dog makes are focused on children’s artwork, van Hulst and Anderson have found an increasing number of people are also interested in making sports, vacation/event, birthday, and baby books.

“We have always emphasized that we make custom books. So, we love to work with clients to incorporate their ideas in order to make a truly unique book. For example, we just finished a glass cover artbook to commemorate one family’s summer trip,” said van Hulst.

“While the focus will continue to be on children’s art, we are thrilled with this expansion into other areas, as well. Nothing makes us happier than seeing a client’s face light up when they see their book for the first time,” said Anderson. “It really means something, and we have made it easy for them.”

With this growth, Jumbo Dog has been working to redesign and relaunch its website, www.jumbodogartbooks.com, to have improved functionality, and to include shipping options for nonlocal families.

“Now people will have the ability to order artbooks online on our user-friendly site. The process will still be very hands on, and we are excited to reach more families beyond our immediate area,” said van Hulst.

Jumbo Dog uses a state-of-the-art wide-format scanner to scan pieces up to 3 feet by 5 feet. Sculptures, trophies and other 2D or 3D pieces are professionally photographed in their studio to include in the books as well.

“What sets us apart is the quality of the books,” says Anderson. “Once people see our books, they understand what makes them special.”

Jumbo Dog’s signature glass cover books feature an anti-scratch glass top, with a precision beveled edge and thick, unbending pages on a substrate core. The books are flush mounted, with real silver halide photo paper, like a traditional high-end wedding album. The superior bindings allow the books to lay completely flat when opened.

“Regular photo books that you would order yourself, on a more commercial site, are mass-produced using inkjet printers and stock papers. They don’t have the same look or durability,” Anderson says.

The process, designed to be easy for busy parents, only requires that they pick out the items they would like to have in their books. For local clients, van Hulst and Anderson will even go to their homes to pick up the art, and/or help sort through it for a small additional fee. Next, Jumbo Dog will scan and photograph all the items and custom design the book. Parents will then receive a link to view their book(s) online for approval. Once approved, books take about two weeks to produce and are then delivered or shipped to clients with their original artwork.
