On Tuesday, Jan. 14, the Whole Foods Markets in Darien and Westport will donate 5 percent of all sales to the Open Door Shelter of Norwalk. The shelter in Norwalk holds more than 95 beds at the facility on 4 Merritt St. The facility serves 60,000 meals a month to individuals and families in the community.
"Our mission is to effectively address the causes and complexities of the homeless and working poor by providing shelter, food, clothing, case management services, treatment services, transitional planning for short and long term goals, subsidized housing, education, employment, and a path toward independence and success," Open Door representatives said on the group's website.
"The shelter operates primarily from private donations, with less than 40 percent of our operating budget coming from government funding. 90 cents of every dollar donated goes directly to providing food, shelter and assistance to those in need. Our board is comprised entirely of uncompensated volunteers."
The Whole Foods Market in Darien is located at 150 Ledge Road and is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14. The Whole Foods Market in Westport is located at 399 Post Road W. and is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14.
