GREENWICH, Conn. --  With Fairfield County families gearing up to go away this holiday season, Allyson Greifenberger and Kristy Gordon, owners of the Greenwich and Norwalk-based The Hair Genies, recommend packing caution.

After all, head lice thrive equally in warm and cold climates.

Girls should wear their hair pulled back in ponytails, advises Greifenberger, and parents should ideally pack the salon's preventative mint spray as a precaution. (The two women recommend using it year-round.)

The two Fairfield County residents -- Greifenberger lives in Westport, Gordon in Weston -- began "The Hair Genies" natural lice treatment salon with a mobile unit in Norwalk in March, 2014 before moving to a brick and mortar locale on East Avenue. They opened a second location in Greenwich, at 228 Mill Street, in March, 2016.

The need for the business grew out of their own personal experiences. Both women say their kids got lice a few years ago and they had no idea what to do. This situation made them realize the incredible need there was for a professional treatment service complete with proper lighting and highly-trained technicians.
