As of Aug. 22, Connecticut’s average gas price of $2.26 has increased four cents compared to this time last week, a slow climb that started late last week. Nationally, the average price of a gallon of gas also increased by four cents from today’s $2.16 average from last week’s $2.12.

In both cases, however, average gas prices are still significantly lower to this time last year, AAA said. Connecticut’s price is 44 cents lower and the national average 46 cents lower compared to this time in 2015.

Connecticut continues to hold the 15th spot on the list of states with the highest gas prices. After weeks of decline, AAA said that prices are increasing slightly because of higher crude oil prices – they jumped to about $48 to $50 a barrel – and some Western and Midwestern refineries offline because of several operational issues.

AAA’s weekly survey of prices in the Nutmeg State’s four regional areas as follows:

  • Greater Bridgeport/Stamford: $2.35
  • New Haven/Meriden: $2.25
  • Greater Hartford: $2.23
  • New London/Norwich: $2.26
  • Statewide Averages: $2.26
Hawaii and California at $2.69 and $2.66, respectively, continue to lead the pack as the states with the highest averages. South Carolina at $1.87 continues to be the state with the lowest price; followed by Alabama at $1.90.

A full rundown of gas prices is available on the national AAA website.
