In the seaside village of Peleg, the setting for "A Remarkable Kindess," four American women have immigrated to Israel for very different reasons. Despite their differences in age and outlook, these four women find each other in ritual, gathering in a burial circle to perform tahara, a final burial rite, for the women of the community. As their intertwined stories unfold, each woman finds the joys promised by the beauty of the land, in new life, first love, motherhood and friendship, supporting each other through irrevocable changes, navigating the pressures of marriage, illicit romance, the loss of a child and war.
Bletter grew up in Great Neck, N.Y., and attended Cornell University. Her writing has appeared in The New York Times, The International Herald Tribune, Huffington Post, Glamour, and Beliefnet, and she was the first prize winner of Family Circle Magazine’s 2011 Fiction Contest. Her novel "The Witches’ Secret" was a semifinalist in Amazon’s 2009 Breakout Novel Award. Her first book, "The Invisible Thread: A Portrait of Jewish American Women" (in collaboration with prize-winning photographer Lori Grinker) was nominated for a National Jewish Book Award. She resides in Israel.
