Drawing on a range of historical accounts, Thomas provides an insightful character study as well as a brilliant political biography.

The book offers a surprising look at a man capable of great bravery and extraordinary deviousness—truly a man divided. 

Thomas is the bestselling author of nine works of nonfiction.  He was an editor, writer and reporter at Newsweek for 24 years, where he wrote more than 100 cover stories. 

He has won numerous journalism awards and is a fellow of the Society of American Historians. He has taught writing at Princeton and Harvard.
