Wreaths Across America is an organization that travels from Maine to Arlington National Cemetery every year laying thousands of wreaths on the graves of veterans.
The organization is celebrating its 23rd year this year, and is hoping to have a wreath adorn the grave of all 250,000 veterans along its route. The Worcester Wreath Co. donates seven ceremonial wreaths to each cemetery that requests them, and donates additional wreaths to be placed in 410 national, state and local cemeteries, 24 foreign cemeteries and on Naval ships all over the world.
Wreath sponsorships will be on sale Saturday at Glen Liquors on Heights Road from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and at the Noroton Heights Stop & Shop on Heights Road from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The public can also contact Darien VFW Commander Phil Kraft at 203-656-0003 to sponsor a wreath.
Collections are being coordinated by Terry Gafney, treasurer of the Darien Monuments and Ceremonies Commission.
Several other Commission members are pitching in, as well as members of Darien's Good Wife's River chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Darien High School Support Our Soldiers group, and the Darien Youth Hockey teams.
The wreaths will be placed on veterans' graves during a ceremony at Spring Grove Veterans' Cemetery on Saturday, Dec. 13, at noon. The public is invited to attend. A wreath-laying ceremony will also be held at Arlington National Cemetery at the same time.
