DARIEN, Conn. - Valentine's Day is a popular time to get married or renew vows, and couples can do both for free at a special event in Darien Thursday.
The Water's Edge at Giovanni's will host its third annual Vow Renewal and Wedding Celebration, featuring a justice of the peace, flowers, champagne and a photographer. There will also be a prix-fixe dinner and photos available for purchase.
“Valentine’s Day only comes once a year and there is tremendous demand from couples to renew their vows or get married on that day so we have decided to accommodate them all," said JoAnn Latorraca, general manager of the Water's Edge at Giovanni’s and second-generation owner. The Darien restaurant and banquet hall recently received a "2013 Best Wedding Location" award by The Knot.
The ceremonies will be officiated by Mary Pugh, a Connecticut justice of the peace. Pugh has officiated the previous group weddings at the Water's Edge, and was recently named Connecticut's Top Justice of the Peace by The Knot. She performs around 325 per year.
The event will take place between 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. Couples should call the Water's Edge at 203-325-9979 before noon on Thursday to register, or register on-site until 6 p.m. The attire is your choice, from casual to wedding gowns.
Couples getting their vows renewed do not need a license. Couples, including same-sex couples, who are getting married should pick up a marriage license at Darien Town Hall before 3 p.m. and bring it to the ceremony. The license costs $30, and you will need a photo ID to obtain it.
