Darien YMCA Enjoys Y Games: Team Charity Challenge

DARIEN, Conn. – On Sunday, June 7, the lobby of the Darien YMCA was filled with Darien firefighters, policemen and Post 53. This wasn’t for an emergency, however. They were there as teams competing along with local families and businesses in the first annual Y Games: Team Charity Challenge.

Nineteen teams of four people competed in seven fitness challenges, which included climbing the Y’s rock wall, running through an obstacle course, slamming medicine balls on the ground and doing as many pushups as possible.

The event was to raise money for the Darien YMCA's financial assistance program while promoting the Y’s mission of healthy living to the community, according to a press release.

“It was great to see the community come together for this fundraising event,” said Gina Zangrillo, president of the Darien Sport Shop, the event’s founding sponsor, in a press release.

Last year, the Darien YMCA provided more than $500,000 in financial assistance to children, families and seniors in the community, including scholarships to camp and scholarships for special needs programs, according to a press release.

The winning family division team was the Branca family of Billy Branca, Cole Branca, Libby Branca, Nick Branca, Tommy Branca, Stacy Branca, Mike Rose and Lybia Sanabria. They received New York Yankee tickets as their prize, along with a chocolate award donated by Chocolate Works Darien.

Winners of the elite division were the Darien Sport Shop team of Jerry Edwards, Sean Fields, Armond Jordan and Kelvin Smith, who won personal training sessions and massages, which were donated back to the Darien YMCA.
