DARIEN, Conn. — Darien YWCA Parent Awareness will present a program on kindergarten readiness on Wednesday, Dec. 3, at 7 p.m. in Blanchard Hall at St. John Church.

The church is located on 1986 Post Road in Darien.

“How Do I Know Whether My Child Is Ready For Kindergarten?” is a focused program that provides support and education to parents and children.

Dr. Marcy Guddemi is scheduled to speak, along with Darien Public Schools district specialists Tim Canty and Laura Straiton.

Guddemi is president and CEO of the Gesell Institute of Child Development and is a recognized expert in early childhood education, assessment and learning through play.

Her talk will touch on what factors go into deciding whether a child is ready for kindergarten, including academic, social and emotional issues, physical characteristics and birth date. Other topics include the pros and cons of decisions regarding the timing of kindergarten enrollment, and the effects on a child who repeats kindergarten.

Following her presentation, Canty and Straiton will be available to answer district-specific questions.

All YWCA Parent Awareness programs are free of charge. Registration is recommended, however.
