CAFAP, the Connecticut Association of Foster and Adoptive Parents Inc., is hosting a donation drive. It is a nonprofit organization that provides advocacy, training, and support services to adoptive and foster parents throughout Connecticut.

Every year, CAFAP hosts a prom-inspired day for teen girls and their adoptive or foster moms. The event is called the “Avenue of Dreams.”

On the day of the event, each of the girls is provided with makeovers, accessories, dresses, and shoes, all free of charge. In addition, each girl will attend a workshop designed to motivate them on the importance of having a mentor. The girls are matched with a mentor throughout the event.

Once the event is over, each girl will receive a portrait of herself taken by a professional photographer. Gift bags filled with hair products, makeup, and body products are also passed out.

“It is a day of magic and inspiration," CAFAP Executive Director Margaret Doherty says. "The girls transform into smiling, glamorous and self-assured young women when they pose before the cameras. Everyone has fun.”

CAFAP is requesting for any and all donations for the event to be a huge success. Donation items may include new or gently used bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses, accessories, shoes, new makeup, or new body products.

CAFAP is also looking for providers to do makeovers and hairstyling during the event.

Donations will accepted Saturday, Jan. 31, from noon until 4 p.m. at The Depot, at 25 Heights Road, in the Norton Heights train station parking lot. Donations are also being accepted at participating dress drive holders throughout the state.

For more information regarding the event or donations, call The Depot at 203-655-0812 or Kareemah Muhammad, outreach coordinator, at 860-258-3400.
