New Canaan 4th Grade Red Ties Ridgefield

NEW CANAAN, Conn. – The New Canaan Red 4th grade Bantam team played to a nail-biting 13-13 tie against Ridgefield Black in what turned out to be a defensive battle.

New Canaan Red won the toss and elected to receive. After being stopped on the first two plays, New Canaan’s offense opened up and scored on a 70-yard sweep by Robert Evans. Key blocks were made by Charlie Mullaney, Thomas Marshall, Dylan McDonald, Alec Kazlauskas and Greg Korsun. The extra-point run by Nick Gilio was stopped just short of the goal line.

The New Canaan Red Defense was stellar on the next three Ridgefield drives, allowing just four plays each time. The New Canaan Red defense was led by the line-backing core of Andrew Smith, Robert Evans and Nick Gilio. On the ends were Christopher Carratu and Thomas Marshall, at tackles Charlie Mulaney and Greg Korsun, at guards Andrew Morse and Jack Hynes and at defensive backs Colby Gardiner and Xander Arnone.

On its fourth possession, Ridgefield threw the ball on 3rd and 10 and Diego Ferreira stopped the drive with a brilliant interception. The QB had defensive pressure from both Carratu and Marshall on the ends and Morse and Mullaney on the defensive line.

On New Canaan’s fifth possession, the offense drove to the Ridgefield 25 with runs by QB Andrew Smith and Nick Gilio. On the third play of the drive, the QB called a TB sweep and Robert Evans sprinted around end scoring a 25-yard touchdown, his second of the day. Key blocks were made by fullback Nick Gilio, center Steven Hoge, Greg Korsun and Thomas Marshall.  The extra-point attempt was successful via a run by fullback Nick Gilio.  New Canaan Red took a 13-0 lead into halftime.

Ridgefield Black took the ball in the third quarter and drove down the field for a touchdown in a drive that took the entire quarter. New Cannan Red’s offense stalled and was forced to punt on the next possession. On Ridgefield’s third possession of the half it drove for another touchdown, making it 13-13. Ridgefield attempted a conversion and was stopped by Chris Carratu, Andrew Smith, Robert Evans, Xander Arnone and the entire Red eefense.

“That turned out to be the play of the game,” New Canaan’s coach was quoted as saying. The New Canaan defense played fantastic the entire game, making key stops all day. Ridgefield got the ball back one time with just minutes left, but its drive was ended abruptly by a key interception by Colby Gardiner, the New Canaan defensive back.

The game ended with New Canaan Red unable to score. The first game of the season turned out to be quite exciting in the early morning hours in Ridgefield.
