The total number of COVID-19 deaths for January is 1,475 which is more than double the deaths reported in December, the state said.

Though as the number of deaths grows, the case rate in the state due to the virus is going down.

The average case rate in Maryland was 73.82 per 100,000 people, down from more than 220 per 100,000 earlier this month, data from the state indicated.

The discrepancy between the decreasing number of people getting sick with COVID-19 and the increase in deaths is due to a weeks-long lad that happens between patients testing positive, and potentially dying due to the virus.
