Oscar Celebration At The Avon In Stamford Rivals The Real Thing

STAMFORD, Conn. -- Shakespeare told us that all the world’s a stage, and we are but merely actors upon it. Well, never is that more true than the last Sunday this February when all of Hollywoodland gathers at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Calif.

Well for those of us who a) weren’t invited to attend that most prestigious event, and b) couldn’t actually afford it even if we had, there is another option — The Avon Theater in Stamford will be hosting its seventh annual Oscar night party by broadcasting a live telecast of the event on Sunday, Feb. 22 beginning at 6:30 p.m.

That’s right, on Oscar night in Downtown Stamford, the Avon Theatre will be rolling out the red carpet for cinephiles and movie buffs of all stripes for the local celebration of the 86th Oscar Awards.

According to Louisa Green, who arranges the entire event for the Theater, attendees will enjoy sumptuous food and drink, and be able to fill out their own Oscar picks in order to be entered to win a number of cinema-inspired prizes.

Attendees of the live event at the Avon will also enjoy a live streaming telecast of the Oscars, all the way from the pre-show red carpet event through the awards show itself, which is to be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, in Hollywood.

The Avon reopened in 2004 as a member-supported independent art theater, and in ’08 it held its first Oscar-night party. That first event was hosted by Tom Bergeron.

According to Green, while the Avon has continued to hold Oscar night parties as a major fund-raiser for the theater, they have chosen to not avail themselves of a celebrity host as they’ve learned that the attendees would prefer to watch the televised Red Carpet events. “Plus,” Green said, "there really isn’t much for the celebrity host to do, and this way we keep the cost down.”

She added that the event becomes a real gala night with spotlights, and individuals dressed up (some in tuxes). “It is wonderful to watch as sometimes three generations of movie fans show up to participate,'' she said.

Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served at the Avon starting at 6:30 p.m., with the Oscar telecast and a buffet supper being served at 8:30 p.m.

The Avon pre-party and supper is hosted by Bar Rosso of Stamford with the co-chairs of the Oscar Night Party being Sabrina Forsythe of Greenwich and Meredith DiMenna of Stamford.

All proceeds from the Oscar Night Party go to benefit the general operations of the Avon Theater which is now celebrating its 11th year as the area’s finest independent cinema. Tickets for the event are $100 for members and $125 for nonmembers. Persons interested in purchasing tickets should call the theater’s business office at 203.661.0321 x2 or visit AvonTheatre.org.

The Avon Theatre is a member-supported, non-profit cultural hub, dedicated to presenting film in its highest form, and thriving because of the support of our patrons and community.

In addition to an exciting slate of new releases, The Avon brings one-of-a-kind special events and monthly programs to Stamford and the surrounding communities; including in-person, community dialogue with directors, actors and other luminaries in a vibrant “Main Street America” setting. The Avon Theatre is located at 272 Bedford St., Stamford, CT.
