The production of the 1979 classic by Ernest Thompson is the first of many events planned to mark the 40th anniversary of the Darien Arts Center. The play is directed by Patrick Kiley and tells the story of aging couple Ethel and Norman Thayer, who spend their summers at their home on the pond. The story unfolds as their daughter Chelsea visits them with her fiancé Billy Ray Sr. and his son, Billy Ray Jr. They ask the Thayers to watch Billy Ray Jr. while they visit Europe, which leads to unexpected bonding between Norman and the boy.
Bonnie Goldberg praised the DAC production on her blog.
"Let this lovely waltz of a play lure you in and catch your heartstrings as Norman and Ethel continue the dance steps they have perfected over the decades, even if they occasionally miss a beat or two," Goldberg wrote.
Goldberg pointed to the production value of the performances and the work of the cast, including "a sincerely caring Nancy Sinacori" as Ethel and "a vibrant Kitty Robertson" as Chelsea. The cast also includes David Jackins as Charlie Martin, the local postman, Will Jeffries as Norman Thayer, MacKay Mumford as Billy Ray Jr. and Eric Dino as Billy Ray Sr.
"Will Jeffries leads this talented cast as the fixed in his ways Norman who often favors fish over humans," Goldberg wrote. "Patrick Kiley directs this gentle tale with a tender hand. An extra dose of down home Maine humor is provided by David Jackins as Charlie, long time admirer of Chelsea and loyal post office delivery man. Holy Mackinoli!"
Performances are on March 20, 21 and 22 in the DAC Weatherstone Studio. Friday and Saturday shows are at 8 p.m. and the Sunday matinee is at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at darienarts.org or by calling the DAC box office at 203-655-5414. The DAC is at 2 Renshaw Road, behind the Darien Town Hall.
