“It’s a magnificent sale,” longtime library volunteer and Westport resident Dick Lowenstein told The Daily Voice while standing in a maze of tables piled high with books. “It’s come from nothing to one of the biggest sales in Connecticut.”

The sale is scheduled to run from this Saturday through Tuesday. Doors will open at 9 a.m. But library restrooms and the outside cafe booth will open at 7 a.m. for early risers, according to organizers.

Over 80,000 items in more than 50 categories, from art to zoology, will be available at bargain prices, as well as vinyl records, DVDs, CDs and audiobooks, and, of course, traditional books.

“It’s one of our biggest fundraisers,” said Heli Stagg, the library’s retail and cafe manager. “It consistently brings in the community.”

Stagg added that many of the items for sale are very affordable, and Lowenstein said many range in price from $1 to $3.

The library, however, is also offering antique and rare books for sale, including two books through an online eBay auction. Those items are a copy of “Disney’s The Adventures of Mickey Mouse,” which was published in 1931 and has a rare dust jacket, and “Colton’s General Atlas.”

The sale’s most expensive book — a first edition of “Grace: Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue” — is priced at $700.

A large army of volunteers was busy preparing the books for sale Thursday morning.

Proceeds from the sale will go to the library’s programs, according to Stagg. The library holds more than 1,000 events — from speakers to music to technology — every year.

Details on the auction, which will end on July 18, are available here

The sale takes place on the same weekend as the annual Westport Fine Arts Festival. Admission to the event is free and organizers say credits, cash and checks will be accepted.
