Monday, Sept. 16

Abstract Landscapes: 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Paintings by Brenda Jacobsen will be on exhibit. Her landscapes and abstract art are influenced by nature, color and surroundings. Jacobsen is a member of the New Canaan Society for the Arts and the Greenwich Art Society.. Free. Darien Rowayton Bank, 1001 Post Road.

Tuesday, Sept. 17

New Cooking Essentials: 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Certified Home Chef Paula Nusslein launches a new Cooking Essentials series of classes. The classes includes lecture, demonstrations, and tastings. Students learn the how and why behind cooking methods and techniques, as well as how to buy, store, prepare, and serve food. $70, or $55 for Darien Community Association members. 274 Middlesex Road. New Jewelry-making Class : 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A new jewelry-making class where students will learn to make their own “jump ring” bracelet during a two-hour workshop, led by instructor Sue Ozanne. Painting Classes at the DCA: 12:45 to 3:45 p.m. The painting class offers  a spacious work area for those interested in learning to paint, or work on their existing talents. Artist and instructor Bernice Weiss welcomes students of all abilities. Students provide materials for the medium of their choice: sketches, oils, acrylics, watercolors or pastels. $150, or $100 for Darien Community Association. 274 Middlesex Road. Book Signing: 7:00 p.m. A talk on the book "My Notorious Life" by Kate Manning, a rendering of a scandalous historical figure, Axie Muldoon, a fiery heroine for the ages. Manning will be signing books after the event. Free. Barrett Bookstore, 314 Heights Road.

Wednesday, Sept. 18

Truglia Thumbelina Fund Benefit Dinner: 6:00 p.m. The Thumbelina Fund is a donor-advised fund of the Fairfield County Community Foundation that aims to meet the special needs of Stamford’s children. The fund has added much-needed wonder, adventure, and joy to countless childhoods to purchase a prom dress for an underprivileged girl, build a playground at a local public housing complex or send promising students to a leadership conference. $150. Thursday, Sept. 19

Learn and Play Canasta at the DCA: 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Learn Canasta with experienced instructor Sue Ozanne. Students new to the game will learn the flow of the game, how to create melds, point values, scoring and going out, as well as tips on strategies to help your partnership come out ahead. Exhibit at the Geary Gallery: 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Reflections of the Soul” features the lush, expressive oils of painter Liron Sissman. Free. Geary Gallery, 576 Boston Post Road.
