Abstract Landscapes: 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Paintings by Brenda Jacobsen will be on exhibit. Her landscapes and abstract art are influenced by nature, color and surroundings. Certified Home Chef Paula Nusslein Offers Second Cooking Essentials Class : 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Certified Home Chef Paula Nusslein will hold the second of her Cooking Essentials series of classes - Sauces I. The classes include lecture, demonstrations and tastings. Students learn cooking methods and techniques, as well as how to buy, store, prepare and serve food. Cost is $70, or $55 for DCA members. DCA Needlepoint Workshop: 1 to 3 p.m. This needlepoint workshop led by Sue Ozanne, past instructor at Darien’s House of Needlepoint, is for both learning and practicing needlepointers. Beginners will be taken step-by-step through the basics and participants with some experience learn a new stitch or just practice among others. Cost is $25 or $20 for DCA members. YWCA Parent Awareness Program Executive Function: Coaching Disorganized Tweens: 9:30 to 11 a.m. Learn coaching tips to help your preteen plan, coordinate and take ownership of their academic performance. Ruthann Short will provide parents with cognitive coaching tips to develop adaptive compensatory and resiliency skills. DCA Art Lecture Series Begins with Music: 1 p.m. The annual Art Lecture Series will be on “The Rite of Modernism: Sensation and Shock in New York/Paris 1913.” Christopher H. Gibbs, Professor of Music at Bard College, will be the first lecturer in the series. Series admission for four lectures and three gourmet lunches. Cost is $135, or $115 DCA members. Darien Sport Shop Hosts “Sip ‘n Support” for YWCA: 6 to 8 p.m. This is a fundraising event for the YWCA Darien/Norwalk. Members are invited to shop and receive a 10 percent discount on their purchases that evening with another 10 percent of proceeds going toward the YWCA Darien/Norwalk and its community outreach programs. Learn and Play Canasta at the DCA: 1 to 3 p.m. Learn Canasta with experienced instructor Sue Ozanne. Students new to the game will learn the flow of the game, how to create melds, point values, scoring and going out, as well as tips on strategies to help your partnership come out ahead.
