YWCA Darien/Norwalk Announces Stand Against Racism Events

DARIEN, Conn. -- The YWCA Darien/Norwalk is hosting several events as part of its annual Stand Against Racism.

In addition to hosting the annual Pledge Against Racism on April 25, the YWCA will host its first annual film festival. The weeklong series will begin on Monday, April 21, and run through April 26. The events are open to the public and are designed to raise cultural awareness within communities.

"The YWCA’s commitment to racial justice is one of the common threads that unites YWCAs across the country," a press release said. "Nearly 300,000 individuals participate in YWCA racial justice programs annually to increase awareness, build trust, break down stereotypes and communication barriers and build mutual respect and understanding of racial differences."

The first annual SAR Film Festival kicks off at 4 p.m. Monday, April 21, and runs through the week with all showings held at the Darien Library at 1441 Post Road in Darien. Some of the films being presented include "The Blind Side," "Deep South," "The Diary of Anne Frank," "Freeheld," "Rafea: Solar Mama," "A Raisin in the Sun," "Schindler’s List," "Stand and Deliver," "Tall as the Boabab Tree," "Undefeated," "West Side Story" and "The Breakfast Club." The film festival is recommended for teenagers through adults.

Tuesday, April 22 4 p.m. Deep South 5:30 p.m. The Breakfast Club 6:30 p.m. Rafea: Solar Mama

Wednesday, April 23 4 p.m. A Raisin in the Sun 6:30 p.m. The Blind Side

Thursday, April 24 4 p.m. Stand and Deliver 6 p.m. Undefeated 8:10 p.m. Freeheld

Friday, April 25 9:30 a.m. Pledge Against Racism Reading with Darien First Selectman Jayme Stevenson at Darien Town Hall 11:30 a.m. Pledge Against Racism Reading with Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling at Norwalk City Hall
