A sampling of Fairfield County spots follows.

  • Ambler Farm, Wilton: With Halloween coming up, the farm offers "Fright Nights" on Fridays, Oct. 20 and 2 and Saturday, Oct. 28. Drop off the kids (grades 3-5) for haunted activities and frightful (and not so frightful) storytelling. It's also fun to visit the farm stand.
  • Castle Hill Farm, Newtown: Check out the four-acre pumpkin patch to pick your own pumpkins, gourds, and squash; there are 40 different varieties to search through. Also pretty fun: the corn maze.
  • Blue Jay Orchards, Bethel: Apple picking is available seven days a week as is the market where you'll find apple cider doughnuts and home-baked pies. Also fun: A trip on the wagon ride.
  • Jones Family Farms, Shelton: Each year, the farmers here grow over 50 kinds of pumpkins and heirloom squashes. There are also daily hayrides, a  family-friendly maze, a winery and lots of goodies to pick up to go.
  • Oronoque Farms Bakery & Boutique, Shelton: Looking for farm-fresh goods? This classic New England spot is worth the drive just for the apple pie or apple crumb, voted one of best in the state by Connecticut Magazine.
  • Silverman's Farm, Easton: There's always something going on at Silverman's where Gala Reds and McIntosh are currently ripe and ready, there's a ton of fresh- baked pies, cider donuts, local honey, syrups and more and the animal farm is open daily until Christmas.
