GREENWICH, Conn. -- A Greenwich Hospital patient shares her experience with nurse Leona Estling from ambulatory surgery, and Greenwich Hospital honors her with the February Quality Award.

I want to share my wonderful experience in ambulatory surgery at Greenwich Hospital. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2012, after being misdiagnosed for some time. The details are too numerous to mention, but I was left with a severe anxiety disorder – so severe that I am unable to go to a hospital without panic attacks.

Clearly, I was concerned that my condition would surface during my ambulatory surgery visit. My nurse was Leona, and I knew immediately that she possessed warmth that would allow me to share my condition and concerns.

She listened intently and discussed options to make me feel safe and prevent anxiety. She alerted other staff members involved in my care and made an extra effort to keep my room calm and quiet. She even arranged for a surgical nurse to meet me so I wouldn’t feel alone in the operating room.

Leona was present during every discussion and explained every detail. Her care went way beyond what I would consider to be part of her job. Because of Leona’s great compassion and skill, for the first time in 16 months, I did not panic in a hospital setting. I felt she did everything within her power to make my treatment a positive event.

She is truly remarkable, and I commend Greenwich Hospital for having such great people on staff. Congratulations, Leona.
