STAMFORD, Conn. -- For one of Hospital for Special Surgery's newest physicians, healthcare comes from the heart. As a doctor in the hospital's Primary Care Sports Medicine Service at the Stamford Outpatient Center and the hospital’s main campus in New York, Dr. Daphne Scott treats athletes and families alike with top level care.
Dr. Scott was born and raised in Las Vegas, and received her medical degree from the University of Nevada. After receiving her degree, she attended the University of Washington for family medicine residency, and completed her sports medicine fellowship at the University of Arizona.
Like most doctors, Dr. Scott had an early inspiration to get into medicine through her pediatrician, Dr. Beverly Neyland. "Growing up, I was awed that I had a doctor who not only looked like me, but was also an outstanding member of the community," said Dr. Scott. "She cared for my sister and me and is still an attending physician at the University of Nevada."
For Dr. Scott, her motivation and inspiration also came in large part from her parents. "I am fortunate to have a mother who always stressed the importance of a strong education and hard work," she said. "She and my father, who passed away after my first year of medical school, supported my long-time dream to become a physician from high school through graduate school."
Dr. Scott ultimately chose to practice family medicine as a means to pursue a fellowship in sports medicine. "To be a great sports medicine specialist, I first had to become an excellent family medicine physician," she explained. During her three years in Seattle, Dr. Scott provided exceptional, compassionate care for her patients and truly believes that her background in family medicine makes her a better sports medicine specialist today.
"For aspiring physicians, I can’t encourage you enough to find a mentor," said Dr. Scott. "The journey to becoming a physician is long and extremely difficult and you need to have someone who has been through it all in your corner. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the help and support of amazing mentors I met along the way. I am honored to join HSS and look forward to working closely with patients who choose HSS for their care."
