The popular garden shop is currently focusing on getting plants ready for Easter, said Michele Blakeslee. They’re offering traditional selections such as tulips, lilies, and hyacinths, but also putting their unique spin on them. Many arrangements are available in glass cubes, with black rocks at the bottom that Blakeslee says contrast nicely with white roots.

When it comes to spring flowers, there are some popular choices such as pansies and violas that people like to put in their window boxes and urns by the front door. But Blakeslee said Nielsen’s likes to mix it up a bit and offer something different.

“We like to be less traditional,” Blakeslee said. In addition to the popular cool-seasonal annuals, they also include nemesias and ranunculus, as well as early spring perennials that will come back every year. Blakeslees aid they  like to use early spring poppies, candytufts and blue salvias.

“It creates a variety of different textures and height levels in the containers,” she said.

The spring plantings usually last until Memorial Day, when people start planting their summer flowers, such as geraniums. Blakeslee said Nielsen’s has started to see an increase in foot traffic as Easter approaches, and anticipates it will increase further as the temperatures begin to rise higher.

“Once the weather breaks, everyone gets anxious to get going. They’re excited to finally see some color in the landscape,” she said. “When you have three or four days in the upper 50s and it’s warm and sunny, everyone wants to get out and working in the yard.”
