The neighborhood, which is part of Norwalk and which is nestled against the Darien border, was frequently pained by John Frederick Kensett, a 19th-century landscape painter of the Hudson School. This tradition has been carried on in an active local arts scene.
Rowayton is the site of a host of beaches, including Roton Point and Bayley Beach, and was once home to the Roton Point Amusement Park.
Steam boats brought day-trippers from New York City to Roton Point Park, and a trolley ran from both Darien and Norwalk. The amusement park's amenities included a bath house, a picnic grove, and rides ranging from the classic carousel to roller coasters with views of the beach.
The community is home to the Rowayton Civic Association, the Rowayton Arts Center, the Rowayton Historical Society and the Rowayton Library as well as Rowayton Elementary School and the Rowayton Train Station.
Pinkney Park annually plays host to a Shakespearean production produced by Shakespeare on the Sound. Patrons sit outdoors on blankets, under the stars, to enjoy the Bard.
The village offers a walkable place to do shopping, get a book and meet up with neighbors.
The coastline is the perfect place to picnic, kayak, dock your boat, ride a bike, run or hit the beach.
