Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, with locations in Danbury, Fairfield and New Haven, among others, landed at the top of the list — again. Pepe’s white clam pie is the No. 1 selection.
“This is a Northeastern pizza genre unto its own, and Pepe's is the best of all — freshly shucked, briny littleneck clams, an intense dose of garlic, olive oil, oregano, and grated Parmigiano-Reggiano atop a charcoal-colored crust,” the Daily Meal said. “The advanced move? Clam pie with bacon.”
And seven more pizza places from Connecticut joined Pepe's on the list:
- No. 3: Modern Apizza in New Haven
- No. 8: Sally’s Apizz, in New Haven
- No. 32: Ernie’s Apizza in New Haven
- No. 33: Zuppardi’s Apizza in West Haven
- No. 44: BAR in New Haven
- No. 63: Mike’s Apizza in West Haven
- No. 85: Colony Grill, with locations in Fairfield, Milford, Norwalk and Stamford, for its unique “hot oil” pizzas.
The voting panel included a team of food writers, pizza bloggers, chefs and other aficionados.
This year's list included 23 states, with the most in New York, with 35 on the list; Illinois, with 12; California, with 10; Connecticut, with 8; New Jersey, with 6; Pennsylvania, with 4; Texas, with 4; and Massachusetts, with 3.
