DARIEN, Conn. -- The 10th annual JR Forever Memorial Walk/5K Run will be held this Sunday at Pear Tree Point in Darien to benefit JR's Ray of Hope, the Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke, and the Good Friend Scholarship in Memory of JR and Jacob.
The Walk and 5K run is held in memory of JR Schoen, who would have graduated from Darien High School this past June had it not been for the brain tumor that claimed his life in July of 2008. The annual Walk and 5K pays tribute to his memory, while also supporting the local community and brain cancer research.
The 5K run and 1.5 mile walk will begin at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8 and will take the scene route around Pear Tree Point. Awards will be given to the top runner in each age category upon completion of the event.
One hundred percent of registration fees will be given to two charities and a scholarship fund for Darien High School Class of 2018 seniors. The charities include JR's Ray of Hope, which donates to local families coping with serious illness, injury or the loss of a family member, as well as the Tisch Brain Tumor Center at Duke University Medical Center. The research at Tisch specifically addresses pediatric glioblastoma multiforme (brain tumor).
In addition, the walk will also benefit the Good Friend Scholarship in Memory of JR and Jacob, which was established in memory of Schoen and Jacob Velasco-Navarro, both members of the DHS Class of 2017. The scholarship will be awarded to Darien High School seniors who demonstrate compassion and support of their friends and community.
Over the past nine years, the JR Schoen Memorial Foundation has raised more than $250,000 and supported many community organizations. JR's Ray of Hope has given more than $25,000 to local Darien families over the past seven years.
The walk will be held rain or shine, with registration opening at 1:15 p.m. at Pear Tree Point Beach. Registration forms are available at www.jrschoenmemorial.org/walk and online registration is available at www.raceit.com (search by zip code). Registration is $25 per participant or $100 per family. Group discounts are available. Day of event registration is available, however, only the first 250 will receive a commemorative t-shirt.
