The most common complaint Dr. Robert Zembroski hears from patients is that medical professionals dont listen to them. Theyre grateful that he does.
Listening to patients and addressing their specific health needs comes easily to Zembroski, he says, because hes been there. And hes come back. If you get through any chronic disease, including cancer, youre a victor, he says.
Zembroski, a chiropractic neurologist known as Dr. Z, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2006. He claims victory over it today. Its due to a five-pronged regimen, he says, that hes integrated into his practice. Central to the plan is stress elimination.
Just before he was diagnosed, Dr. Z was going through an especially stressful period. I wasnt eating well, I wasnt sleeping. It was like the hurricane of stress. I felt like I was wiped out. Surgery removed the cancerous tumor, but pre-surgery bouts of chemotherapy left his body weakened and subject to infection.
To achieve and maintain health, Dr. Z embarked on what he calls a Cancer Victor lifestyle. It includes getting enough sleep, physical activity, eliminating toxins, proper nutrition and managing stress. In introducing the program to patients, he says, What were trying to do simply is give people simple steps in those five protocols.
Regarding stress in particular, he says he wont again be put in the position of being overwhelmed by it. Theres nothing more stressful than what I went through, he says of being diagnosed with and being treated for cancer, so [managing] stress now is easy to do.
Dr. Z, who grew up in Stamford and is a graduate of Stamford High School, now lives in Wilton. His practice is located in Darien.
