Kaye Leong is always trying to create closer ties between people in the Darien community. It might be putting together a fundraiser for a cause, handing out checks to organizations or introducing people at networking events. That's why shes receiving the Community Fund of Darien's Volunteer of the Year Award.
"I do a lot, but I'm fortunate that I can," said Leong. A member of the Darien Chamber of Commerce , she spends a lot of time organizing events for town businesses and encouraging people to shop locally.
"I've loved getting involved with the Darien Chamber . It's like a family, and they've really put in a lot of work in recent years to make it a better community resource."
Leong also helps out the community in her capacity as an assistant treasurer at the Darien Rowayton Bank . The bank supports many local organizations, including the Darien Library , the Historical Society , the Nature Center and the Depot , and Leong plays an integral part in reaching out to these organizations and making sure that they receive the backing they need.
"I work to navigate the bank to help out these organizations. We have to support them, otherwise how else are we going to build a vibrant community?"
Even when she's not volunteering, Leong likes to stay active by going to the gym and playing tennis and golf. She's eager to put her golf skills to the test at a golf outing on Sept. 21 hosted by the Darien and New Canaan Chambers of Commerce.
Leong thinks that it's important for people to volunteer their time and work together in order for a town to grow and prosper. "It's not going to happen magically. It's like growing a vegetable garden: You have to put in time and nurture it, otherwise it's not going to reward you with fresh organic vegetables."
Leong will receive her award at a special luncheon on May 13 at the Darien Community Association .
