Rebecca Martin travels from Darien to New York City at least once a week, trying out different restaurants and learning about the newest food trends. Then she takes what she learned back to Darien, where she recently opened Becca Innovative Catering .
"Our foods and service that we offer are very edgy," Martin said. Her business adapts its style to a wide range of events. "If we're catering a high-end event, our service is more like that of the Pierre Hotel. We have models in three-piece suits serving. If we're at a casual event, our servers are more hip and cool and not wearing tuxedos with bowties."
Martin has had a love of food ever since she got her first job in a restaurant when she was 15. She attended law school and worked as a law clerk for a few years before taking time off to raise twins. But her love of cooking did not fade.
"I was sending my husband off to the Talmadge Hill train station with gourmet treats for the whole train," she said. Eventually she opened a wholesale bakery in Stamford, Sweet On You , but wanted to branch out into cooking as well.
"I love the opportunity to cook in front of guests. People are interested in the art of cooking, so it adds entertainment value," she said.
She likes to experiment with her food and offer people things they've never seen before, including mangos that have been transformed into pearls using dry ice, even edible spoons. "I like everything to be edible. If it's on your plate you should be able to eat it."
Martin brings her innovative cooking to a many different events, from weddings to graduations to corporate affairs to private parties. "It's such an honor to be part of a family's important moments or a business's important events. I love that we get to make people happy. You don't get that in law."
