How much do you spend on groceries a week? $100? $200? Well, if you go through Angelfood Ministries with Robert Pomeroy and Nick Agneto at New Beginnings Community Church in Darien, you can get everything you need to feed a family of four for less than $30 per week. Better still, the program is open to anyone who is interested regardless of income or location.
We hope that Darien will be a jumping off point for the reach of this program to grow, Pomeroy said. Before New Beginnings teamed up with Angelfood Ministries, the closest drop-off centers to Darien were in Bridgeport and New Milford. Now, New Beginnings hopes churches in Stamford, Norwalk and all over Fairfield County will use their program to offer Angelfood boxes in their towns. Since the program has no eligibility requirements, Angelfood can help anyone. Even in relatively affluent communities like Darien, the primary provider for the household might have been out of work for a year at this point, Pomeroy said.
The signature box is designed to feed a family of four for a week for $28.95, and includes steaks, chicken breast, pork chops, pasta, frozen vegetables, milk and eggs. Pomeroy said he went to a local supermarket and calculated that the package would cost $65. Angelfood also offers other boxes, such as one of kids snacks, a fresh fruit and veggie box, and prepared meals for diabetics.
This is not second-hand food, Pomeroy said. Were going to have the same quality control as a retailer.
New Beginnings will have its first round of deliveries on Aug. 28. Families place orders online with a debit or credit card, or can pay with cash and food stamps by stopping by New Beginnings on Sundays after services, which usually end around 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. As long as they place and order by the months cutoff date (Aug. 22 for this round), anyone whos interested can pick up a box.
