White, founder of Darien Academic Advisors, is the author of the new book "It’s the Student, Not the College: The Secrets of Succeeding at Any School — Without Going Broke or Crazy."

The book dispels the notion that you need to attend an elite school to be successful and supplies a road map on how to distinguish yourself no matter what school you attend. Her book, helps families sort through their decisions with confidence and logic.

“I wanted to remind people that students can be successful no matter where they go to college,” said White. She was also quick to point out that independent studies back up her viewpoint.

“Gallup-Purdue did a study designed to measure both the college experiences and the lives of college graduates and found that the selectivity of the college a student attended mattered less than what a student actually did while on campus,” she said.

The book redefines the importance of getting into an elite college and encourages students to start their college experience with a plan to build on skills and personal qualities that will be vital to their futures.

Instead of obsessing over GPA cutoffs and SAT scores, students learn how to build a personal “success profile” by adopting beneficial traits that help students make the grade in school and in life.

The book explains how what a student does in college counts more than where they go and defines important criteria to consider when choosing a college. It also advises how to find a good fit for family finances and offers tips for graduating career-ready and landing a great first job.

“Expensive, elite colleges have too much sway over the minds and bank accounts of students and parents," White said. "I wanted to break that stranglehold with 'It’s the Student, Not the College' and reveal the real secrets of success.”

White lives in Darien with her husband, Michael, and their three daughters, ages 8, 7 and 2. She also runs her business, Darien Academic Advisors at 975 Post Road in Darien, which helps families plan for higher education and help students find their passions.

She is also the author of "The Complete Guide to the Gap Year." White is a member of the New England Association for College Admissions Counseling and the Independent Educational Consultants Association, and is a graduate of Georgetown University with a master's in business administration, from the University of Texas-Austin.
