Darien Arts Center Awards Prizes In Smart Phone Photo Contest 'Pic Darien'

DARIEN, Conn. -- The Darien Arts Center recently awarded 28 cash prizes in its first-ever smart phone photo contest, "Pic Darien."

The fundraising contest garnered almost 400 entries in seven categories, with submissions from all ages.

Following are some of the contest winners with organizers of the event at the April 8 reception in the DAC Weatherstone Studio:

Contestants were not required to live in Darien, and photos were submitted online from as far away as California, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Washington D.C., in addition to Connecticut.

The following prizes were awarded in the student categories (age 15 and under):

  • My Darien, First Prize to Amit Chernichaw
  • Family and Friends, First Prize to Sofia Campo, Honorable Mention to Waverly Waters
  • Landscapes/Nature, First Prize to Emma Seely, Honorable Mention to Katie Coda
  • Pets, First Prize to Alyssa Farrell, Honorable Mention to Kallie Hapgood
  • Abstract, First Prize to Grace Gardella, Honorable Mentions to Grace Argiriou and Meritt Hole
  • Photobomb/Selfie, First Prize to Katie Cota, Honorable Mention to Amit Chernichaw
  • Travel, First Prize to Anna Passaretti
The following prizes were awarded in the adult categories (age 16 and over):
  • My Darien, First Prize to Julie Johnston, Honorable Mention to Megan Gildea
  • Family and Friends, First Prize to Milissa Knightly, Honorable Mention to Jolanda Sutherland
  • Landscapes/Nature, First Prize to Raymond Michaud, Honorable Mention to Marie Reynolds
  • Travel, First Prize to Carin Zakes, Honorable Mention to Ruth Anne Ring
  • Pets, First Prize to Lauren Gomez, Honorable Mention to Diane Farrell
  • Abstract, First Prize to David Gioiella
  • Photobomb/Selfie, First Prize to Dani Woolwine, Honorable Mention to Paul Lin
First place prizes for adults were $100 and the adult honorable mention prizes were $25. First place prizes for students were $50, with the student honorable mention prizes awarding $15.

Nationally published professional photographer Alix Martinez of Darien judged the contest, a fundraiser.

All photo entries were showcased in a slideshow on the DAC Weatherstone Studio’s 184” HD movie screen at an Award and Reveal Reception on April 8. The slideshow will be shown again during the intermission at the DAC’s June 25 talent competition, "Darien’s Got Talent."
