DARIEN, Conn. -- Several Darien churches are preparing for an event that will help feed thousands of starving children later this year.
The churches will join together Oct. 19 and 20 for the fifth annual Feed My Starving Children MobilePack Event at Middlesex Middle School in Darien, according to a news release. Darien's 11 local churches and the Council for Darien School Parents will sponsor and run the event, according to the release.
"The Darien FMSC MobilePack Event continues to be a great success," representatives said in the release. "In 2012 more than 1,000 children and adults from Darien volunteered their time and energy to put together over 240,000 MannaPack Rice enough to feed 657 starving children a meal a day for a year. Meals packed in the 2012 Darien FMSC Event were sent to needy children in Ghana and El Salvador."
Representatives estimate that the groups have packed more than one million meals since 2009 with this year's goal set at another 200,000 meals, according to the release. About 1,000 volunteers are needed for the event, which will begin with a service of prayer and dedication at 8 p.m. Oct. 16 at Calvary Baptist Church in Darien.
