Darien Dog Spa Unites With Charity To Aid Shelters

DARIEN, Conn. – Ridgefield resident Lisa Robin has teamed with the Hairy Barker Inn & Spa in Darien to help her mission to improve the lives of dogs and cats in shelters. Robin’s organization, Blankets and Bowls, collects donated items to provide comfort for animals while they wait to be adopted.

Robin became involved in 2009 when she lost her beloved dog, Abbie. She knew she wanted to adopt a shelter dog, and while finding her new best buddy, Sugar, she learned more about the animals in the shelters.

“I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Million of dogs enter shelters and don’t make it out,” she said. “The amount of dogs some of these shelters can get in one day is mind-boggling.”

Robin started collecting gently used blankets and towels to deliver to shelters, along with other items such as toys and leashes. She works with shelters all over the country.

“My love is nature and animals,” Robin said. She works as a gardener while volunteering to help the animals. She is hoping to secure nonprofit status and is looking for other volunteers. “My ultimate goal is to unite others who have a passion for donating, fostering and ultimately adopting these animals.”

She encourages people to check their linen closets for gently used blankets and bedding that are clean. Shelters also need tennis balls, leashes, collars and cleaning supplies.

Since launching Blankets and Bowls, Robin has connected with others who share her passion. She met up with Sandy Bonom of the Hairy Barker through Facebook, and together they set up its only drop-off point in Fairfield County. Other drop-off locations are in Guilford, Middlebury and Torrington as well as in Massachusetts.

“There are so many of these animals that need heroes. That sense of affection and caring might make them feel more comfortable, more safe and more adoptable.”
