DARIEN, Conn. -- Mary Lawrence Huffman of Darien has been named the recipient of the 2016-17 Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award.
Huffman is the daughter of Marilyn and Sam Huffman.
The award is an annual presentation of Darien’s Good Wife’s River National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution Chapter and is given to a Darien High School senior who best exemplifies the qualities of patriotism, citizenship, leadership, dependability and service to the home, school and community.
Huffman was selected by the senior class and the faculty to receive this award. She recently received the certificate and pin from DAR Good Citizen Chairman, Kim Kiner and Good Wife’s River Chapter Regent, Katherine Love, during the DAR holiday reception.
Huffman is President of (SOS) Support Our Soldiers Club and recently volunteered by collecting sponsorships for Wreaths Across America, a worldwide wreath-laying tribute to veterans. This year, SOS joined members of the local VFW Post #6933 and Darien’s Monuments and Ceremonies Commission in soliciting wreaths.
Huffman is a member of the National Honor Society and a reporter for Neirad, the school newspaper.
A varsity athlete and a captain of the cross country and track teams, Huffman also teaches fresh water kayaking as a summer camp counselor.
She is a member of the Big Brother/Big Sister, now known as the LINK program which helps freshmen and transfer students feel comfortable and adjust to student life at Darien High School. She also volunteers at Person to Person, Atria Darien and Noroton Presbyterian Church. After college, she hopes to pursue a career in business or political science.
