Darien Hosts Free Valentine's Day Wedding Ceremony

DARIEN, Conn. – Lots of people get married on Valentine’s Day, but only in Darien will all the ceremonies be held in the same place at the same time. On Tuesday evening, the third annual Valentine’s Day Free Wedding and Vow Renewal will take place at the Water’s Edge at Giovanni’s.

Mary Pugh , a Connecticut Justice of the Peace, will perform the ceremonies. “It’s a nice way of giving back and spreading the concept of love on Valentine’s Day,” Pugh said.

About 15 couples joined together last year for the event, she said. Pugh performed a group vow renewal, with couples all holding hands. She said fewer people get married, and she usually takes them aside to perform the ceremony separately.

Anyone looking to tie the knot should pick up a marriage license at Darien Town Hall before the ceremony. Pugh said it’s best to get there before 3 p.m. A license costs $30.

The ceremony is free, and couples have the option of picking up professional photographs after the ceremony. Each couple will also get a rose, heart candies, champagne and a certificate commemorating the event.

Pugh is expecting about 30 people this year, though she said there may be more. When asked why people might choose Valentine’s Day to get married, she said, “It’s a great way to remember your anniversary.”

“It’s really fun to be surrounded by so many people who are so happy. There’s a really positive vibe in the air,” Pugh said.

You can register to take part before noon Tuesday by calling the restaurant at 203-325-9979 or you can register online until 6 p.m. The ceremony starts at 8 p.m. There is no obligation to buy dinner at the restaurant, but Pugh recommends it as a romantic cap to the night.
