Members voted in the board of directors for 2014-15, and President Gwen Morgensen spoke about the club’s activities over the last year.
A documentary, “Shored Up,” was screened during the year. It involves information about global warming and coastal development. The league sponsored the film, along with other leagues in the area.
Jeff Greenfield, author of "If Kennedy Lived," a book released around the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy was a guest at another meeting. He talked about his book and answered audience questions.
U.S. Rep. Jim Himes, D-4th District, was a speaker at the February league meeting. He spoke about “Hot Topics in Washington.” The league also co-sponsored a program called MORE (Municipal Opportunity and Regional Efficiencies), in conjunction with the Darien Library.
Other highlights included the league-hosted Candidates Night debate involving the Board of Education race, along with the Voters Guide that the league published before elections; a legislative breakfast with state representatives and senators; and the Town Officials Lunch. Additionally, the league was instrumental in registering 155 new voters during an event at Darien High School.
The Darien League of Women Voters was featured as part of the “Community Conversation” series on Channel 79 this year as well. The program focused on the organization’s history, from 1929 when it was developed up until current times.
