DARIEN, Conn. – The YWCA Darien/Norwalk recently announced its 2013-14 board of directors.

The new board has extensive experience ranging from finance to communications. The board members are:

  • President: Julie Forsyth
  • Vice President: Deborah Papaeconomou
  • Treasurer: Elizabeth Svedlund
  • Corporate Secretary: Jolanda Sutherland
  • Strategic Planning: Rachel Martin and Mia Mihopoulos
  • Members-At-Large: Patty Bach, Beth Cherico, Susan Daly, MariLu Cleary, Francie George, Deirdre McGovern, Michelle Saldivar, Shannon Silsby and Kristin White
  • Executive Director: Ellen Kirby

The board supports the following initiatives and programs:

Stand Against Racism: To bring attention to the importance of human rights, the YWCA Darien/Norwalk initiatives include keynote speakers, a race and pledge reading.

Women of Distinction Awards & Luncheon: These awards celebrate and recognize the many local women who have inspired others with their work to improve our local, national or global community.

Job Search Support for Women: This program assists women in all aspects of the job search process and has benefited more than 2,100 women.

Parent Awareness: Providing numerous parenting events throughout the year, this family-focused program provides education to parents and children to encourage the healthy, positive development of youth and families.

Children’s Programs: Toddler Time, Summer Fun and Art Studio are YWCA enrichment programs open to all members of the community.

Social Activities: To provide women with a place to connect with each other in their community, the YWCA offers numerous activities for members, including Newcomer’s Club, Working Mom’s Network, International Club and Playgroups.

July 4th Push-n-Pull Parade: This annual event attracts thousands of residents. Families decorate their nonmotorized vehicles and parade down the Post Road to Tilley Pond Park for a true community celebration.

The YWCA is the oldest and largest multicultural women's organization in the world. With more than 590 members in lower Fairfield County, the organization provides community service and social activities for children and adults.
