Darien Promotes, Rewards Green Business Practices

DARIEN, Conn. — The Darien Community Association and the Chamber of Commerce both recognize the importance of the environment in helping a town thrive. The chamber honored the DCA on Thursday night for its green efforts.

Heather Pommernelle accepted the Green Ribbon Award for the DCA. She highlighted the DCA's greenhouse as one of its many green practices, where it uses organic growing processes without pesticides. It also recycles and reuses the pots and places much importance on recycling.

"We also recently had a lot of invasives removed from the property. We're always battling those. We planted a lot more plants, and try to make it healthy place," she said. The group has also decreased its paper use and kept the thermostat low to reduce its carbon footprint.

The chamber is celebrating its sixth Darien Going For Green event. Businesses around town are encouraged to take efforts to be more environmentally friendly in their practices. First Selectman Jayme Stevenson read a proclamation, declaring April to be Darien Going For Green Month.

The Hotel Zero Degrees in Stamford was an appropriate venue for Thursday night's event. It strives to be as environmentally responsible as possible by installing energy efficient fixtures, recycling, using utensils made from composted material and offering guests a shuttle service to reduce carbon emissions.

The Darien chamber also recognized Darien High School students Carly Berizzi, who came in first, and Caity Dee, who came in second, in the chamber's contest to design posters for Darien Going For Green.

The green month will culminate April 28 with the townwide Beautification and Clean Up . If you or a group of volunteers are interested in taking part in the cleanup, call 203-655-3795.
