Aiss, 26, is working on a master's in business administration in finance at Fordham University. He commutes to Darien from New York City to tutor about 20 students of all age groups weekly in biology, physics, chemistry, economics and history.

In addition to helping students with homework and class assignments, Aiss said students also are learning comprehensive study skills.

“It is very rewarding to use my knowledge and share it with my students so they can avoid making the mistakes I did,” he said.

A Norwalk native, Aiss has a bachelor’s degree in biology and pre-med from Fordham University and attended New York Medical College.

While looking for research opportunities when attending medical school, Aiss said a friend at Sylvan recommended that he become a tutor so signed up for the training program.

Many of his students are taking the same classes he took when he was in school, Aiss said. He enjoys seeing them improve by practicing good study habits and using time management techniques.

“It is completely satisfying to see someone who is struggling improve and get better grades while they mature as students. That is fantastic,” he said.

In addition to strong study habits, students should explore their interests, seek out internships and start talking to people who can help them discover their strengths and weaknesses before going to college, Aiss said.

“In the long run, this will save them time and energy,” he said.

The Sylvan Learning Center is open to all students. Director Gwynne Campbell can customize learning programs to suit any elementary, middle and high school student, including those with special needs.

Although he works long days, Aiss said he is energized by his students' interest in learning.

“When talking to the students, I remember my own enthusiasm for learning, and it gives me energy in discovering my own career path,” he said.
