The Darien Police Department, Post 53, Darien Fire Department and Noroton Heights Fire Department teams returned to the Y Games to compete with local residents and businesses.
Each team was comprised of four people who competed in seven fitness challenges, including climbing the Y’s rock wall, running through an obstacle course, slamming medicine balls on the ground and biking as far as possible in 15 minutes. Following the competition, the Darien YMCA hosted a reception for participants and their families, which included Meatball and Co., Mister Softee, and bottles of Sportwater.
The purpose of the event was to raise money for the Darien YMCA Financial Assistance program while promoting the Y’s mission of healthy living to the community. Last year, the Darien YMCA provided more than $500,000 in financial assistance to children, families, and seniors in the community, which included scholarships to camps and special needs programs.
This year’s event included only adult teams. Darien Y Health and Fitness Director Jess Van Sciver said: “We were delighted to see so many teams return from last year and have their families come to support them. This is truly a community event!”
The winning team was composed of Tyler Gould, Thad Hall and Darien High School seniors Kyle Canelli and Nick Gould. Their prize was four, 50-yard-line tickets to a New York Giants game and a VIP parking pass donated by Peter Gogolak of Darien.
Second place went to Post 53 Team A, which included Carl Hunter, Jay Patrick, Shane Ford and Michael Belloli. The third-place team was Darien Police Department squad of Joe Licari, Edwin Vigil, Mauricio Vigil and Amanda Hinkley.
The Darien YMCA is grateful to the 40 sponsors of the Y Games event, including the lead sponsor, The Darien Sport Shop, and appreciates the many volunteers who donated their time to help. For more information about the Darien YMCA’s programs or how to volunteer, please visit www.darien-ymca.org.
