Teen Lean Machine is the Y’s new program to teach kids good nutrition and exercise habits through workouts with a trainer twice a week and a nutrition seminar once every two weeks.  Participants receive a FITBIT FLEX™ activity tracker to monitor their exercise and sleep, a great way for parents and kids alike to watch their progress. Additionally, each participant undergoes a fitness test and assessment administered in the beginning, halfway point and conclusion of the competition. The winning participant is determined by their tracked activity and sleep by using their FITBIT FLEX™, as well as how much progress they have made from the first fitness test compared to the last.

A total of 12 students participated in the first round of Teen Lean Machine including three 5th graders along with students in 6th through 9th grades.  The winner of the competition was 5th grader Emily Dimonekas. At the beginning, she wasn’t sure if she was going to be able to keep up.  But she said her trainers “pushed me, helped me if I wasn’t doing something right, and were really nice and supportive.”  Emily’s mom Sarah participated in adult Lean Machine simultaneously and they compared notes on their workouts like how many more push-ups, sit-ups, and burpees they were able to do each week.  Despite the fact that Teen Lean Machine is over, Emily is convinced the strength and endurance she gained through the program will help her performance while playing lacrosse and basketball.  She has also changed her eating habits as a result of Lean Machine and now enjoys a fruit smoothie or cheese and crackers instead of junk food after school.  She misses her Lean Machine training group and says, “It was a lot of fun because we were all working together and supporting each other.”

Teen Lean Machine and Lean Machine for adults will be offered again this Spring, with the session beginning May 2nd and ending June 28th. Registration is currently underway for members and non-members. Lean Machine and Teen Lean Machine will be offered in the Fall as well.  For more details, please visit the Darien Y website at www.darien-ymca.org/fitness/lean-machine or contact the Y’s Wellness desk at (203) 655-8228 ext. 1322.
