Ellen Walsh, 83, Former Darien Substitute Teacher

DARIEN, Conn. – Ellen M. Heffron Walsh, a 43-year resident of Darien, died Monday, April 9, at Norwalk Hospital after a brief illness. She was 83. 

Walsh was a popular and respected substitute teacher in the Darien elementary schools for many years in the 1970s and '80s.  

She was born in Brooklyn and raised raised in Flatbush. She spent summers at her family home on Scott's Beach in Miller Place, N.Y. She graduated from St. Joseph's College in Brooklyn and received a master's degree in education from City College of New York.  

Walsh worked as a kindergarten teacher in Garden City, N.Y., and in Bloomfield, N.J. Prior to that, she was an assistant buyer at the Gimbels department store in New York City. She was married for 51 years to Thomas J. Walsh, who died in 2010. They moved to Darien in 1969 and lived here for the rest of their years. 

She was a fan of Broadway musicals and the New York Mets, as well as a talented artist and avid reader of biographies. 

She is survived by three sons, Thomas J. (Catherine) Walsh Jr., of Fairfield, David J. Walsh, of Darien, and Stephen J. (Elizabeth) Walsh, of Katonah, N.Y., and five grandchildren. 

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in St. John's Roman Catholic Church in Darien. Edward Lawrence Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
